Grandiose Beginnings

Here is the blog for the gentlemen's reading group. I decided to name it Commodius Vicus, mainly because it is slightly interesting, sounds somewhat scholarly, and has a better ring than "a gentlmen's reading group". I got it from James Joyce's novel Finnegans Wake, in which he uses this term to refer to the philosophy of the cyclical nature of history. I thought one way we could apply this to the group is that we will be reading and discussing literature from any given time period, observing and integrating different elements of the story into our lives, hopefully letting it somehow change us. Heck - it could be Greek tragedy, which has stunningly similar qualities in its story as contemporary fiction. There really is nothing new under the sun.

Anyway, I will be adding features as we go, but this is mainly a resource for you to post what you want and to exchange information, such as reading guides and questions. This just seems more simple than sending out mass emails all the time. This will also include the time and place of our next meeting. Enjoy!

Cheers,

Jacob
